5 Visualizations

5.1 Geography & Time

Our two-dimensional datasets are the most straightforward to use. They use two concepts,

  1. GEO (geographical area) using colors, usually referencing to the national colors of the geographical area.
  2. TIME (reference period) for an indicator. We place the time on the familiar dateline on the horizontal axis.
  3. The measurements are placed on the vertical axis.
  4. The OBS_STATUS (observational status) attributes clearly show the actual data received from the Eurostat agency, the E estimated (imputed) and the F forecasted values. The visualization does not show the imputation and forecasting methodological data—it is part of our dataset and codebook.

For larger datasets, we use a modified (facetted) version of the linechart, grouping the countries in a way that the color legend remains readable.
